Things No One Tells You Before Your First Cycling Class

If you’re like me, you’ve never been to a cycling class but are really excited to try it out.  It can be a little intimidating to try something new, especially an exercise class.  I put together a list of things that people don’t talk about when it comes to cycling. This will help you get an idea of what to expect in class so you can focus on the workout and enjoy the process!

We are so excited to offer cycling at H2L Studio and can’t wait for you to try it!

1. Pick any seat– some studios offer online reservations for seats, but H2L doesn’t so don’t be afraid to sit where you want.  Fan of the front? Go ahead and snag it!!

2.Dress for success– they always say it is important to look the part and part of cycling is the sweat…wear clothing that will wick away the sweat fast.  You will get sweaty!

3.Don’t forget to drink– because you are sweating so much you need to make sure you hydrate, so bring your H2L water bottle and fill it up!

 4. Strap in or clip in– clipping in and out of the pedals can be scary, you may feel stuck!  Simply take the time to clip in when the bike is immobile and make sure you feel secure for the long run! Or, wear a pair of sneaks and strap in. Sneakers are okay!! Don’t feel as though you can’t try a class with sneakers.

 5. The Bass– the music is loud it might scare you at first, but once you know what’s going on you’ll starting rocking out!

6. Learn the lingo– Indoor bikes have resistance knobs which will take you from feeling like you are biking on the open road or up a mountain.  The instructor will guide you using your speed and your training zones to get you where you need to be but if you feel like it is too easy or you’re going to pass out from exertion then adjust as you feel comfortable. It is your ride!! Do what works best for you.

indoor bike7. Customize the ride– No one wants to be more uncomfortable than they have to be during exercise, make sure you adjust the bike to fit you.  The height of the seat, distance from the handlebars and height of the handlebars all should be considered – and the instructor will help you set yourself up before class. If you are unsure, ask questions!

8. Tech savvy-  Use the power console and leaderboard if you so choose.  Both are additional tools that can help you progress during class and from ride to ride.  Again, the instructor will prompt you on how to use – and always ask questions!

9. Need-to-Know- Some things to remember: towels will be provided, be early so you don’t get turned away for being late and eat a pre-workout snack to give you energy to last (be sure to eat it 90 minutes before the class to give it time to digest)

10. Your legs may feel like Jell-O– and your bottom may hurt.  Don’t let this deter you from coming back – after a few rides, you will be comfy in the saddle!

We have some cycling classes scheduled! Enjoy free classes (you have to be signed up online in advance) the week of 3/7-3/12 and discount, $5 classes the week of 3/14-3/18.
