Employers are starting to incorporate wellness programs into their companies in order to bring down absentee costs due to illnesses. Not only are employees healthier when they are involved in a wellness program, but they are also more productive during their workday.

As the Buffalo Business First writes, there are 5 steps to building a company wellness program.

Want to treat your employees to a workout class? Need some team building? We offer private classes!

Step 1: Determine Eligibility
Who in the business should have access to these benefits, full-time employees, interns, spouses?

Step 2: Establish Incentives
What will you have to do in order to get the majority of employees to participate in the program? What will motivate them?

Some companies use competition among the employee’s, others have offered prizes or giveaways for participants of the program.

Step 3: Choose Challenges
Make the activities challenging! Consider the employee’s daily work and try to plan the program around what they need most in their day to day life, for example, if they spend most of their day sitting, add activities that involve being up and moving around. Each person may find different workouts challenging, try using a survey to best understand what will challenge and motivate your employees.

Step 4: Verify Employees’ Progress
If the employees have some way to report their progress, they are more likely to be accountable and consistent with the program. It will also give you, the employer, a way of tracking their progress in order to apply those incentives.

Step 5: Promote and Communicate
Find the best way to reach your employees, do not settle for sending an email that will probably get lost in the business of their day. Find an interactive way to launch this program and get your office excited about your new wellness program. (Source)
